Video hosting for online courses: what course creators need
By Craig Crawford, founder of Blue Flame Media · 20 October 2026
A course lives or dies on its lessons playing smoothly for paying students, and only for them. That puts a few specific demands on your video host.
What a course host must do
- Keep lessons private, so they only play where you put them.
- Show a clean player with no adverts or suggested videos.
- Keep each course in its own folder.
- Offer subtitles, for accessibility and for students watching on mute.
- Show you which lessons students actually watch.
Watch out for success being punished
A launch that goes well means lots of views at once. Course creators should check a host's bandwidth rules carefully, because several Vimeo reviewers say high usage led to a pause threat or a new contract.
“We pay $780/year for the Advanced plan, paid through Nov 28, 2026. On Oct 9, 2026, Vimeo's sales team told us our account would be paused in 7 days over bandwidth usage. Then came the price: a Custom plan at $5,900/year.”
Where Blue Flame Media fits
I built Blue Flame Media after Vimeo did this to me. It is a simpler video platform with managed hosting, folders, a branded player, subtitles and analytics. You don't need any technical setup.
You can bring your Vimeo library across with the built-in Vimeo import, folders included, so you are not re-uploading hundreds of files by hand. Our prices are on the pricing page for anyone to read.
Questions people ask
- Where should I host videos for my online course?
- On a private, ad-free host that embeds into your course platform, with folders, subtitles and clear bandwidth rules.
- Can students download or share my lesson videos?
- With private hosting, lessons only play where you embed them. No host can fully stop screen recording, but privacy settings stop casual sharing of links.
Quotes are short, word-for-word excerpts from public reviews. They are those reviewers' own experiences, which we can't check. Vimeo is a trademark of its owner. Blue Flame Media is not connected with Vimeo.
